Talking about that…

Meet Freeda – the canvas chicken made by Mona Leonard.

Easter was coming and I needed some decor for my kitchen island. I wanted it to be cute and fit for the holiday but at the same time, easy to adapt and good to use after the festive season is finished. I decided to make a chicken and, for the base,  a wreath out of colorful bows in purples and blues. It looked amazing with an easter basket next to it and it looks great now, on it’s own bringing some color to my kitchen.

Mona used the following:
Canvas Corp Canvas by the Yard
Canvas Corp Burlap by the Yard
Canvas Corp Hemp Rope Natural Hank ’45
Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – Orange
Sewing machine
Needle, Thread, Glue

I started by folding a piece of canvas in half and tracing a triangle to form a chicken.

I then cut my material on my traced line and sewed all around leaving about a 3 inch opening.

Here is where I flipped my material putting the sewed side inside.

I stuffed my chicken using about 2/3 of stuffing and 1/3 of beans and closed the 3inch opening using a needle and white thread.

I cut a small triangle from the canvas and used my High Impact orange paint to paint it – it will become a beak.

Here is where I cut about 12 pieces of cord and using a large needle made hair for my chicken.
I also used 2 black straight pins to make eyes and glued the beak on the chicken.

I used my bow maker and some canvas and burlap and make a total of 10 bows and glued them onto a foam circle to create a base on which to sit Freeda.

So here is – Freeda, the canvas chicken.

Freeda’s sister

When Ewelina – one of the CCB Crew – saw my project, she asked if I could possibly make Freeda a sister and send her over to England where she lives. So I did.

This is Chicken, the canvas chicken 🙂 and she now lives in Yorkshire, England where she watches over Ewelina’s craft stash.

I hope my project not only inspired you to have a go at making easy stuffed toys but also put a smile on your face!

Happy crafting!
