Playing In the Wanderlust Junque Book

Wanderlust Junque Book is the perfect mixed media starter book filled with 6×6 pages journal lines, burlap, canvas and fluted paper. The book is covered with printed paper book covers on the front and back and printed on the inside; it is bound together with a sewn strip of natural canvas.
So that’s how we made the book but what you do with it is completely up to you! You can paint, glue, stamp, stencil and stitch. There are no limits to it at all!

Today our Crew member, Tracy Dickinson, shares with us exactly what she did with her Junque book. Starting from embellishing the cover through prepping the pages to actually completing one of the inserts.

There’s plenty to keep your creative juices flowing!

‘A 7Gypsies Wanderlust Junque Book serves well as an art journal because it contains a variety of substrates. I use my art journals to experiment with techniques, color combinations, new products, and anything else that pops into my brain while I am creating. There was experimenting to be done just in determining what would work well as a first layer on each of the pages, so I started there.’

Preparing the Pages

Materials used:
7gypsies Wanderlust: Junque Book 6×6
Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – RedLight PinkWhiteOliveBlack
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Cross My HeartPolka Dot Pink
Tattered Angels Chalkboard – Black OrchidChalk
7gypsies Architextures™ Small Base – Doilies
7gypsies Architextures™ Parchment Rub-On – Grow
Homemade stencil
Golden Soft Gel (Matte)
Liquitex Glazing Medium and Matte Medium
Utrecht Gesso
Collage Pauge
Wax paper
Paintbrushes
Palette knife
Bone folder

1. Brush Tattered Angels High Impact Paint in Red and Light Pink onto the red burlap. Be sure to put a piece of wax paper behind the page.
2. Apply 7Gypsies Architextures Parchment Rub-On – Grow to the lined craft page.
3. Mist through a stencil onto the raw canvas page. I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Cross My Heart and Chalkboard Mist in Polka Dot Pink. After masking the center of the page, mist the edges with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist in Black Orchid. Brushing on some water softens the edges. Apply Golden Soft Gel (matte) front and back as an isolation coat.
4. Apply an Architextures Small Base – Doilies to the next craft page. Applying mists did not produce the look I was hoping for, so I painted the entire page with Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – White. After that was dry, I mixed Hight Impact Paint – Olive with some Liquitex Glazing Medium and brushed it over the entire page. After a minute, wipe off some of the mixture from the doilie with a damp paper towel to reveal the white paint and beautiful texture.
5. On the brown burlap page, apply gesso with a palette knife. The wax paper under your page will catch some gesso as well. Once dry it can be used to add texture to the back of the fluted paper page.
6. The brown fluted paper page first gets a coat of gesso applied with a large paint brush, leaving some of the brown color peeking through. Then spray with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist – Polka Dot Pink and dry. Then apply Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Black Cherry into some of the flutes using the sprayer tube. Finish it by dry brusing on some Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – Black.
7. Apply Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – Light Pink to the back side of the brown burlap page. Then mix some Glimmer Mist – Black Cherry with Liquitex Matte Medium and brush onto the dried paint.

Completing a page in the 7gypsies Wanderlust: Junque Book

‘The base is red burlap and was prepped with Tattered Angels High Impact Paint in White and Red. I gathered some elements I might want to use and set to work.’ – explains Tracy.
