How To Make A Spring Art Journal: Dance in the Rain

Making a year round art journal can be a lot of fun. Make a page for each season, for each month or by the day.  Spring reminds us of flowers, rain and new growth and this amazing page Heidi created will remind us of that and to not forget to Dance in the Rain.  You may be new to art journals or seasonal journals, well if you are and you want to be inspired here is the page for you to give it a try and learn a bit about watercolor, paper layering and simple mixed media techniques.

Hi everyone, Heidi from www.makeyourlifecolourful.com here, today I have an art journal page for you for which I used lots of gorgeous Canvas Corp papers and also some beautiful Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists.

Today I’m working in my 7gypsies Architextures “Vintage Pink“ Mix and Match Book and I choose a page with a script background. The fun thing about this Mix and Match Book is that you can take pages out while you’re working on it and you can put it back in when you’re finished. And even though the pages are not made out of watercolor paper they can handle a lot of water, so that’s always a plus!

Step 1:

I started this project by fussy cutting three of the larger flowers from the Canvas Corp “Black Check Flower on White“ patterned paper. Then I colored these flowers with some beautiful Tattered Angels products and a small brush. I sprayed some of the color onto my craft sheet and picked the color up with my brush. I used the following colours: Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist in “Medallion“, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists in “Dijon“ and “Pink Coral“. After the coloring was done I added back in some of the details using a white Gelly Roll Pen and I went around the edges with a Memento Dual Marker in the color “Tuxedo Black“ (this makes the edges nice and crisp).

Step 2:

Next I started working on the art journal page itself. I applied some The Crafter’s Workshop “Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste“ over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Harlequin“ using a palette knife and then set this page aside to dry.

When the modeling paste was dry I added color to the background by applying Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist in the color “Medallion“ to the project with a brush and spraying with water, causing the color to run. When I was happy with the way this looked I dried my page with a heat tool. Then I added splatters to my project with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists in the colours “Dijon“, “Pink Coral“ and “Almost Black“, drying between each color before putting on the next one.

To finish the background I went around the edges and over some of the modeling paste with Archival Ink in the color “Coffee “, and also around the edges in some places with Archival Ink in the color “Jet Black” and finally I put more accent on the harlequin design with a white Gelly Roll pen.

Step 3:

Now it’s time to work a little on the other elements for this project: I fussy cut one of the quotes from the Canvas Corp “Spring Sayings on Ivory“ using my Fiskars scissors and I created a slightly larger mat from Canvas Corp Tissuestock in “White“. The tissue paper mat I edged a little with Memento Ink in the color “Olive Grove“.

I also die cut a square panel from the 7gypsies “Take Our Breath Away“ patterned paper. For this I used the green side of the paper featuring the harlequin design. Then I die cut the inner square out so that I’m left with a frame. You can also create this frame with just a ruler and craft knife.

I edged this frame with the same Olive Grove ink that I used before to create a more defined edge.

Step 4:

Now that all the elements are ready I can put this page together. I first adhered the green frame to the page using one millimetre thick foam tape. Then I adhered the sentiment to it’s mat using see through tape runner and adhered these combined mats to the page using two millimetre thick foam tape. And to finish this fun page I adhered the flowers to the page using liquid glue and one millimetre thick foam tape. I wrapped the stems of the flowers around the edges of the page and adhered them on the back using regular tape.
