The Beach Is My True North Burlap Art

No one ever wants to forget the memory of a perfect day at the beach, but how do you capture the feeling of having your toes in the sand and the noise of crashing waves around you? Today, Valerie turns her fond memories of the beach into a beautiful work of art using a tiny Canvas Corp stretched burlap, Tattered Angels High Impact paint and some shells that she gathered with her daughters. You don’t always have to take a photo to capture a memory, sometimes it’s more about capturing the color and the feeling of a place – Valerie does that beautifully here.

Hi, I’m Valerie and I have created this project after a quick trip to the beach with my daughters. We gathered shells and had a great time out of our routine. I did think of the title at this time : “beach is my true north” as the sea always have a awesome effect on me…

Materials needed:

1. 3×3 Stretch Natural Burlap by Canvas Corp
2. White Metallic High Impact Paint by Tattered Angels
3. Alpha Stickers by Sticko
4. Shells
5. Sisal Rope by Canvas Corp

Tools needed: Heat Gun; Glue Gun; Compass Mask by Tim Holtz; Small Paint Brush

The texture of burlap can be a challenge to paint sometimes and that is why Tattered Angels invented its High Impact Paint.  This thick and luscious paint is a perfect choice for painting on burlap and other textured surfaces.  Many paints will paint onto the burlap, but they dry into the fabric, High Impact dries right where you left it and has a beautiful finish.

Step 1 – Using a a small brush, paint with the mask carefully by small touches. If you put a large amount of paint into the canvas, the paint will bleed under the mask. Heat with a gun to speed up drying.  Let dry completely.

Step 2 – Decide what you want your canvas to say, “beach is my true north” was the perfect saying for me.  I resized the alpha stickers and distress the edges with scissors.  You can stamp or stencil your letters onto the canvas as well.

Step 3 – Adhere the shells and some canvas string with a glue gun or liquid glue that dries clear. You could add hot glue to the stickers to secure them on the canvas.

This little burlap canvas is perfect for the beach house, next to your bed on an easel or in your nautical themed room.  You can make them big or small as stretched burlap is available in a wide range of sizes.  There are so many great nautical stencils on the market you can make an entire ensemble of nautical art in your own stye.
