As our love everything journaling, planning, sketching, doodling, painting, altering…grows, so does our yearning for more handmade books and journals to capture those special moments. Amber takes us back to the art of the old sketch book with her modern take with a vintage twist. Amber’s book features the latest collection from 7gypsies Wanderlust.
Hello Canvas Corp Fans! It’s Amber here! Today I thought it would be fun to share this fun little Sketch Book I created with a 7Gypsies Rubber Band Book and a few sheets of patterned paper from 7Gypsies two newest collections, Wanderlust and Ordre du Jour.I used the 7Gypsies Rubber Band Book (these are not available anymore, but you can make one of your own quick and easy – simply cut two pieces of book board to your desired size. Score the book leaving a 2″ side piece on the front and back. Make two small inserts on the top and bottom of both boards that will hold the rubber band of your choice.) So whether you are using a blank book you already have, pull a 7gypsies book from your stash or make your own you can follow along as Amber walks you through her book. Add ivory cardstock pages for the insides of your book. You could use it to create a travel journal, a notebook that fits inside your purse, a sketch book like I did, or even a weekly/monthly planner.

Step 1. Cut some patterned paper to cover the book boards. I cut five different patterns out of the Wanderlust: Pack Your Bags 12 x 12 Paper Sheet. This paper features 6 very unique vintage patterns that each measure 4″x6″ each.
Step 2. Trace your front and back cover onto the paper of your choice. You can mix and match them or use one of the larger prints. You will want to cover both sides of your book covers and the insides.
Step 3: Decorate the front (and back if you would like) covers. The 7gypsies papers have a matte finish when printed and are prefect for stamping directly onto the paper. The simple vintage backgrounds let your stamps stand out. Choose your favorite titles, sayings and stitch them together after distressing the edges of the paper to make a great focal point for your book cover. Then add stamps, ephemera that you love. Finish it off with a simple tie of canvas letting the raw edges ravel wonderfully.
Step 4: Decorate the inside pages by covering them with your favorite printed papers and then cut out ephemera pieces that you love and place them. Don’t forget to leave room for sketches, you can leave part of the ivory paper exposed or add a piece of ivory paper on top for your sketches.
The Wanderlust and Ordre Du Jour collections offer a wide range of inspirational sayings and words to live by that are perfect additions to your sketch book, art journal, daily journal, agenda and more. So no matter how you make your sketch book, big or small, thick or think, just remember to sketch, draw, write, remember, take note and spend a little you time.
