Have you ever looked at a crafty tool or device, and could visualize as something other than what it had been made to be? That is me and embroidery hoops. These lightweight circles of wood (my preference over the plastic ones) that I have never used to actually embroider anything, are the perfect staples to build a delightful mixed media piece of art. To begin, I used two different sizes of hoops, as I wanted a dimensional layered look. The absolute best background for the hoops is the Mixed Media Origins-Wings, the cloth like texture of this specialty paper easily sets Tattered Angels Glimmer, Simply Sheer, Chalkboard & Baseboard Sprays and Mists. I chose to use a watercoloring method with a variety of colors and finishes of the above listed Tattered Angels products to color the butterfly prints, and background. Once I had colored the paper, I set aside and painted the embroidery hoops using Tattered Angels High Impact Paint. I lightly traced the inner circle of each hoop, onto the patterned paper, as well as heavy cardstock I added to the back of the paper once cut for extra stability. I also fussy cut two of the butterfly designs for extra decorative elements. I then added the “pictures” to the hoops, and finished by adding flowers, lace & enameled letters, and gluing the smallest hoop to the larger one, using Beacon Mixed Media Glue. A lovely, vintage look lightweight piece of art, perfect for any space.
Products used for the project:
Embroidery Hoops – 8-1/2” and 4-1/2”
Tattered Angels Mixed Media Origins Collection: Wings
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Old Penny, Walnut Gold, It’s Black, English Ivy, Gold, Merlot Gold, Ivory
Tattered Angels High Impact Paint – Rose Gold
Tattered Angels Simply Sheer – Birthday Party, Safety Orange
Tim Holtz Distress Oxide: Antique Linen
Frayed Burlap, Paper Flowers, Lace
ScraPerfect BestGlue Ever, Gel Medium
Scissors, ScraPerfect No-Clog Writing Cap ( used with glue)
Watercolor Paintbrush
After tracing around the outer circumference of each hoop, I cut the Tattered Angels MM Origins Wings specialty paper. I then proceeded to color the butterfly & lattice design print using a watercolor method, first using water on my brush, then doing various shading with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists & Simply Sheer shades. I finished using the Distress Oxide Inks to give an aged look to the background, and bring out the print elements of this gorgeous paper.
I secured each embroidery hoop by using glue, and setting screw as tightly as possible. Using TA High Impact Paint, I painted each hoop entirely, and set aside to dry.
Once the TA High Impact paint had dried, I applied TA Glimmer Mist It’s Black with a brush, and lightly removed with a dry paper towel, to give and aged look to the entire embroidery hoop surfaces including the hardware.
Using glue ScraPerfect’s Best Glue Ever, I then glued each hoop to the finished Tattered Angels MM Origins Wings paper, allowed to set for just a few moments, then glued the remaining decorative elements to finish my design.
It’s a full of autumn colors piece of wall hanging, which is sure to add warm, rustic feel to your home.
Thank you for stopping by.
