Turning new into old is quite an are and Karen Crossen definitely has the skill needed to pull it off. With the help of Tattered Angels mists and with Architextures Artboard as a base, she created this vintage looking piece of home decor.
I love the look of old manilla book paper! You know the paper type that is thin, fragile and looks like it is going to fall apart if you touch it?? My favorite!! Instead of ripping up a old book – I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists and Glazes to turn new white and manila paper into ‘old’ for a fun home decor piece! And the beauty of this project is you can use any quote you want!
Karen used the following products:
7gypsies Architextures – Artboard 8×10
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Cork, Partridge in a Pear Tree, Marmalade and Lime Light
White Map Paper, Manila Paper
Distress Collage Medium, Matte Medium
Twine, Buttons, Tissue Paper, Washi Tape, Flower Stamp, Archival Ink
Paint Brushes
I found some awesome bright white map paper. I grabbed it thinking it would be a wonderful background! But for this project I wanted old, brown paper. So I used Tattered Angels to make it darker! (And if you don’t have map paper, you can google a map image and print it out.) After you have the map paper ready, take it and ball it up! When it is balled up, spray over the paper with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Partridge in a Pear Tree. When it dries, take out a brown ink pad and go over the creases in the paper. After you finish that, straighten out the paper!
For the base of this project, use a 7Gypsies Mixed Media ArtBoard. Take the map paper and very gently brush a Distress Collage Medium over the top. Brush lightly and as little as possible. The moisture will reactivate the Glimmer Mist, but if you use just a little and go over it only once it won’t move too much. And the great thing is, after the medium dries, the color won’t move again! Use matte medium to glue the paper down to the artboard. Don’t smooth it down too much, you want to leave wrinkles for texture! When it is drying you can spray more Glimmer Mist and splat it a little too, to create more color!
Print out the text you want on tissue paper and glue it down to manila paper. Use Glimmer Mist in Cork to darken up the paper and make it look more vintage. You can also take out the spray nozzle and splatter the Mist onto the paper to make it appear dirtier! Glue it down to the artboard with matte medium!
Find some delicate flower stamps – I had these in my stamp box – and stamp them onto the manila colored paper. Use Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Marmalade and Lime Light to watercolor the flowers. After they are dry, I like to spray them with Workable Fixative. After the fixative dries, the Glimmer Mist and stamped ink will stay on the paper no matter what you put on top of them. When the Workable Fixative is dry, spray and splatter the paper with Glimmer Mist in Cork. Wrap the bottom of the art board with twine and add on a couple of button embellishments. Tear the stamped flowers into individual pieces and put in the corner under the twine and buttons!
Step back and enjoy your new home decor piece!
