Whimsical butterfly glass dome

Who said that paper crafting has to be on a flat surface? Let’s defy the customary and build a paper butterfly glass dome! Using scraps of music sheets and Tattered Angels mists, you can create a beautiful and colourful mini-world. Our Crew member, Sanna Lippert, shares with you her whimsical home decor project she created to bring Spring into her home. How delicate and ephemeral is this fluttering creation!

‘A while back, I saw a beautiful butterfly home decor piece on Pinterest and, from that moment on, I wanted to create a similar spring piece of my own. I then found the perfect (and reasonably priced) glass dome at IKEA and there was no stopping me anymore. I recycled some leftover pieces (wire, wood base, music paper) and used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists to color the paper. I then only needed to built the piece together and adhere the punched butterflies. To finish, I embellished the stand a bit and, now, the piece decorates our home. Every time I look at it, it makes me smile. There is also a short start-to-finish video for this piece to give you an idea, how I created it. Hope you enjoy watching it and get inspired to create your own spring home decor piece of some kind. Take a good look at the “junk” lying around your house; you just might find the perfect pieces without needing to buy much, like I did. Have fun!!!’ – explains the behind-the-scenes Sanna.

Sanna prepared a video tutorial to show you exactly how she filled her glass dome with the colourful butterflies:

Sanna also shares some tips worth taking into account:

1. I did not adhere the wooden base to the dome. That way I can replace the decoration with something new from one season to another. I recycled “junk” pieces. That saves money! Flea market music note book works wonders as misted butterfly paper. And everything works well together when misted with same spray ink tones.

2. The design is very simple and easy to do but requires a bit of patience when adhering the small butterflies together. I´ve always adhered two together; that way, no matter from which side you look at the piece, there is always a colorful butterfly to be seen.

3. Depending on what kind of look you want to go for, you can also keep the colors very monochromatic, shabby or even dark. I wanted to add color and lots of it to brighten our home a bit. I cannot wait for spring to arrive and I think you can see it in this piece!

This could also be a perfect project to do with your kids over the weekend; have them misting the papers and punching out the shapes. It will be fun having them creating their own little worlds under the glass dome.
