Wings On Wednesday – The Daydreamer Fairy

Over the last couple of months we have shared with you a variety of wing inspired projects. Our Wings On Wednesday series has introduced us to canvas, art journals, cards and various off the page projects; some of them have been feminine, some of them not so much; some of them were more about the idea than the wing symbol itself; but all of them were beautiful and inspirational… and today’s project is no different!
Our Crew member, Cristin Stevenson, took an Architextures angel’s wing, Mixed Media Origins papers and Tattered Angels paints and mixed them with her grungy, dark style.
Result? See for yourself!

Today, I wanted to create a texture-rich mixed media piece and as I reached into my “stash drawer” I found some incredible collage and texture papers to work with. I also found a cute Architexture’s wing and decided I would put together a Daydreamer Fairy! Why a daydreamer, you ask? Because *I* am a daydreamer myself. I catch myself daydreaming every single day about this or that. It seems like my mind can never shut off… do you feel that way too? If so, you may want to join me and make a little daydreamer too. – explains her inspiration Cristin.

Materials Cristin used:
Tattered Angels – Mixed Media Origins – MelodyMasquerade Ball

Tattered Angels – Glimmer Mists – DragonflyAbominable SnowmanTarnished SilverCoffee ShopIridescent Gold
Architextures – Tin Tiles – Packaging
Architextures – Findings – Angel Wings
Canvas Corp – 12 x 12 Canvas Sheet – White
Canvas Corp – 12×12 E-Flute Black
Golden – Gel Mediums – Glass Bead Gel
DecoArt Media – Matte Medium
DecoArt Media – White Gesso
Golden Gel Mediums – Clear Tar Gel
Heat Gun
Hot Glue Gun

To start, I grabbed a bunch of fun collage materials. Look at these beautiful papers! As you can tell, it’s mostly a black/white feel. I “auditioned” them on a piece of matboard – meaning I took some time to figure out exactly where I wanted each piece to be!

Once I had everything situated exactly as I wanted it, I grabbed some matte medium to glue them down. For bigger pieces, like the canvas sheet, and the corrugated cardboard, I used hot glue to make it just a little stronger.

I added a thin layer of gesso randomly so as to help the collage “melt together”. I wanted it to look like one cohesive piece! Once the gesso was dry I added color with beautiful, shimmering Tattered Angels Mists. Here, I went wild with Dragonfly, Abominable Snowman, Coffee Shop, Tarnished Silver and Iridescent Gold.

Next, I used Golden Glass Bead Gel with an Artistcellar Cathedral Plains stencil. I took a photo of it really close up so that you can really see the effect that this medium gives. It dries mostly clear, so you can really see the shimmering Glimmer Mists underneath, too!

At this point, my matboard looks a little something like this.

To finish it off, I carefully cut out this figure from the Mixed Media Origins – Masquerade Ball paper. Isn’t she a beauty? I also added this little Architextures wing, which I re-inforced with hot glue just to be sure.

This daydreamer fairy is certainly full of color and texture… maybe you can daydream her story?
