Make it a Mixed Media Christmas Card

What happens when Christmas is upon us and you didn’t buy any holiday craft paper for the season?  No worries, just grab your basics in red, green, gold and silver and start creating.  Crew Member Mandy Leever-Koel had just such a dilemma and it did not take long before she was in the creative Christmas spirit with a craft table filled with pretty vintage papers, anything gold, a few die cuts and a Merry Christmas cut out (that is easy to do on your die cut machine.)  So if you are short on holiday craft supplies or would like to use up some everyday goodies, here is a great card that will definitely show you that there is truly Christmas everywhere.

Mandy wanted to participate in our card countdown, so she challenged herself to look beyond her traditional Christmas supplies, which she did not have much of, and think outside the box. Wow the results are stunning!  Mixed media crafting allows you to layer, paint, cover, dip, ink, distress all the items you use, so why not apply the same theory to your Christmas projects?

Mandy mentions, “Luckily Canvas Corp Brands carries many papers that are perfectly suitable for occasions like this. This particular paper came from the 7gypsies “Ordre du Jour” collection and is called “Break the Rules” and was a terrific choice.”  While Mandy is breaking the rules and creating with non-Christmas supplies, using a paper called Break the Rules is quite a funny twist.

“Add some of that marvelous Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist and Glimmer Glam and you’re good to go!”  Mandy says.  Glimmer Mist will transform just about any surface and to get an even more unique look use a heat gun. Glimmer Glam will add glitter and tint any object making it a great choice to cover your basic crafts.  It is amazing on fabric too as the glitter shows up really well.

When looking for craft supplies Mandy suggests you browse your local home décor store for some fun fabric snowflakes, drinking straws and other inexpensive non-craft supplies. Then adapt some of your regular flowers and leaves, add some ribbon in warm colors and voila, you have a terrific holiday card, canvas or even holiday decor piece you can show off during the season.

Materials used:
7Gypsies Ordre du Jour Collection: ‘Break the Rules’ paper
7Gypsies Gypsy Moments Tags Scrolls

Tim Holtz mini stencil swirls
Straws gold and ivory w. gold stars
‘Open’ red glitter ribbon
Fine gold ribbon
Velvet leaves green
Christmas flower red
Cardstock Doily
Red letterbox die-cut

Tools used:
Brushes – glue- spatula – heattool

Begin by cutting the 7gypsies ‘Ordre du Jour Collection: Break the Rules’ paper in half. Fold vertically.  This paper has a nice vintage vibe and is a good base for the card.  It is also made of cardstock so it will stand up to paint, color and layers.

Add a mixture of modeling paste and Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam ‘Golden Goddess’ through Tim Holtz mini swirl stencil on the right edge of the card. (I had to move the stencil twice to cover the entire surface.) Allow it to dry some, then add some more Glimmer Glam ‘Golden Goddess’.

Now it is time to build the card…..

Add a dark cardstock doily, covered in Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam ‘Golden Goddess’, onto the card. Glue it down in the center.ccb-xmas-card-countdown-5

Make a composition with golden straws and a straw with stars, held together by red ‘open’ ribbon.

Glue red mailbox on the right side partially underneath. Add some green velvet leaves, also colored with Glimmer Glam ‘Golden Goddess’, underneath the straws.

Add a red Christmas flower to the left side. (The petals were painted with Glimmer Mist ‘Crimson’ to dim the bright red.)

Cut 7gypsies scroll in half, shoving both halves underneath the doily. Attach golden ribbon through its holes and through the card.

Add a gold snowflake cut in 2 halves, add golden swirls where desired.

Cover the wood ‘Merry Christmas’ with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam ‘Golden Goddess’ and glue it on the middle of the straws.ccb-xmas-card-countdown-7
