From time to time we like to invite crafters to be our Guest Designer/Blogger for a month to challenge us to see things in a different way and so that we may learn more about our products through the eyes of a new designer. We kick of this serie of articles for 2018 by inviting a crafter that residents in Montana, US – Welcome Denise Morisson.
Where are you from?
Missoula, Montana USA
How would you describe your design style?
Modern Vintage Grunge? I suppose. I love lots of color and am a huge fan of scribbles and love little bits of this and that.
How long have you been creating?
I have been painting since my teens and have enjoyed paper arts and scrapping since about 2001. I have recently started painting again on large canvas with acrylic. I am challenging myself to have enough paintings to show in a year. It is so intense and scary sometimes but I love it.
What is your go to product right now?
I am loving washi tape and stamps for smaller paper projects and just lots of acrylic and oil pastels for larger art canvases.
Do you have a signature touch you like to include in all your pieces?
Sometimes I like to just scribble like a little kid. They do it so much better though.
What advice would you give to someone who gets in a creative slump?
I have been there so many times, it feels awful sometimes. I have tried all kinds of things. Sometimes looking up art on Pinterest or Instagram helps but that can backfire when I start comparing. Stop comparing is huge. In fact social media can be such a time sucker that it will often get in the way of creating. I really try not to be on social media much because of that. Just make stuff and who cares what it looks like. I find if I am creating for how it will be received on social media I am often stuck and don’t like what I am doing. Just create for yourself. Creativity is a muscle. The more you use it the stronger it is.
What is the oddest inspiration you have used for one of your projects?
Well I don’t think it’s odd but I don’t know if its something a lot of people think of. I adore children’s art. They have such freedom in their creative process. I am always inspired by projects I see made my children. There is something so expressive and honest about what they create.
Tell us one thing that people might not know about you.
I strangled a 30 pound rabid raccoon that was biting my best friends son’s leg.
How often do you create?
I would say at least once a week. I wish it were more but it’s okay. I have a full life and many interests. I find that I need balance and so some things get pushed aside at times for others. If I didn’t work I am sure that would be different!
Do you jot down your ideas before you do them or do you create as you go?
I am a create as I go. I do think about things a lot though when I am not creating. There is a lovely process that happens for me when I can just go for a hike or have some quiet time before work to just think and imagine. Ideas and inspiration come to me at odd times.
