Handmade 2017 Mixed Media Calendar

We love handmade gifts and here is a calendar idea for 2017 you might want to whip up for a few on your list this year.  ccb-christmas-gift-1-med-ramme

Hello it is Jorunn again and you know how much I love to make Christmas and birthday gifts and I have made a calendar to share with you.  This time I chose a pink and green theme that was so easy with Tattered Angels paints and I included 7gypsies into the design.  This mixed media calendar was so fun to do and it is a great gift for anyone on your list.  You can easily change the colors to match their style, maybe the colors of their kitchen or office.  They will see it each day and remember who made it.  I gathered up some of my favorite mediums, stencils and of course my Tattered Angels paints and got to work.  With mixed media there really are no rules, so have fun and follow along.  If you don’t want to make a calendar, you can also make a piece of art for the wall, the cover of a journal or even a card.  Just give it a try and have some fun.

Golden’s Coarse Pumice Gel is a bit magical for when you add this to your art along with Glimmer Mist, the color is absorbed by the medium and it is pretty amazing to watch. You do not have as much control on the final results, but you will love it anyway. Most of the time I have used it I get wonderful results and if it is not as desired, we can fix it with gesso or add another layer. See no rules or mistakes in mixed media….just have fun.

Start with a cardboard or wooden shape or make one yourself.  You can also repurpose an old clock, wall hanging or other item in a fun unique shape.  Don’t worry about what is underneath, you won’t see it, just look for a great shape. Even a record or other hard surface will work, be creative even in the base you choose.  Here you can see that I have used stencil and gesso. When using glimmer mist on gesso, the gesso will shine through which adds depth and life to your background. You can layer stencils, mediums, colors, textures where you want and with the colors you want.  Using a chosen color palette at the beginning helps for all the pieces to work so well together.

Once you’ve added color on to Coarse Pumice Gel, it looks like small beads. If you touch it feels like sand and water right before it becomes cement . This helps to give depth to your art.  The Glimmer Mist and Tattered Angels paints look different on each medium and texture.

I’ve used  some lace  at the bottom and some 7gypsies collage tissue, it is not very visible since I have lots of layers with other medium. The tissue paper you can see under the word Today. I have not used gesso on  the metal, to get a little more tough style.

When I use Coarse Pumice Gel, I apply mist with a paintbrush. I went over with white glimmer mist and then I sprayed. In close-ups you can see it sparkle, but otherwise it is difficult to catch it when taking pictures. I took first Black Glimmer Glam around the edge of the heart. To fix it, I used  first white Gesso, and then Espresso Bean.  The Glam is a great way to finish the edges and it is also a great top coat with glitter that dries into the paint.

I have a little fun story to tell you.  I bought two packages of calendars, for I thought that each package contained one calendar. Well no .. they contain 3 pieces, but I did not realize it at the time and put all 3 onto my calendar. My dear mom asked me, “isn’t the calendar that you’ve put on a bit too thick. Maybe it’s weekday too not only a whole month?”  Well I always know best, so I said “no” to my mother. Yesterday when I talked the manager at Scrappiness and asked her for three new packages of calendars, she asked, “how many calendars are you going to make?”  I said, “a couple” She responded with, “but dear Jorunn, each package of calendars contains 3 calendars, you just have to split them up.”  I just have to laugh at myself, not to mention stop being so stubborn. Or maybe just read the contents on the package and I should know that Moms are always right!!!  If you don’t have a package of calendars like I did you can find free downloads on the internet and you can print and add them to you calendar.  Consider punching holes and adding 2 hooks and you can add the right week or month.

The words I have used on the calendar is taken from the pattern sheet to 7gypsies. Good words to embrace a whole year.
