Vicki Ross shares amazing painting, collage and mixed media techniques on her video French Teapot. The project begins with a single sheet of Canvas Corp Paper and a Stretched Canvas and Vicki transforms them into a work of art. The teapot is the focal point of this piece with beautiful details all around and the frame was created with one of the Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Kits, which are faux finish fits that are terrific for mixed media backgrounds, home decor pieces and works of art.
Vicki takes you through the process in her French Teapot YouTube video. Take a look and below we are highlighting some of the details.
Let’s begin our story with the history of this great Teapot. Vicki attended La Bonne Etoile, Fontaine-Fourches, France. It was a two week artist retreat studying with Leslie B. DeMille. La Bonne Etoile is located 65 miles southeast of Paris. The village is nestled in a corner of the Ile de France on the edge of the Brie, Champagne and Burgundy regions. One of the projects was to photograph still life and they had wonderful antiques and natural items to choose from. This amazing copper teapot has such great vintage details and if it could only tell a few of the stories it has heard over afternoon tea.
Vicki was inspired by her photo to create an amazing painting from the photograph. This original painting was done in Soft Pastels on Wallis Sanded Paper and can be viewed on her gallery online – Copper Still Life
Here is the set up at the studio in France, even the set up is beautiful.
Vicki begins with a piece of printed kraft paper – this is the Canvas Corp Fill the Cup on Kraft – a beautiful teacup inspired printed cardstock paper. This background can be painted, white washed, deckled edged, inked, misted, distressed to get the look you are going for.
Vicki uses a photo of a French Teapot she took herself in a studio class she attended in France. This becomes the base for her collage.
Gather pieces of cardstock, stamped papers, handmade papers, Japanese papers, etc. to create your collage, you can also use Gelli prints you made on a range of papers. You can cover the entire teapot with tiny cuts of paper and apply with gel medium. You stay within the outline of the art.
Vicki reminds you that there are no rules, have fun, add papers, paints and try your favorite mixed media techniques. Vicki shows you that you can even use painted paper towels and take them apart with Scotch tape, so much fun. Outline the teapot with black marker to define the outline of the teapot.
Add mediums through stencils to create texture and detail to the canvas letting just a bit travel onto your focal point art.
Add stamps, stencils and other details in beautiful neutral colors to accent your teapot.
Add lettering with stencils, stamps to create the this title piece.
This painted wooden frame was added to the back of the teapot artwork to frame it and also it adds a nice rustic texture to finish off the design. This once raw wood frame was transformed with one Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Kit – Weathered Bronze – you can find the entire collection of Naturally Aged Kits to match your color palette.
Add to eyebolts to the top of the frame after you attach the Stretched Canvas and Frame together and hang with a natural jute cord. So next time you go through your stack of 12×12 paper or see a 12×12 paper you just have to have, but are not sure what you will do with it, consider doing a collage.
