Painted Rooster Canvas

Today we have a great project to share with you by CCB Crew Member Kimberly N. It’s a gorgeous painted and layered rooster canvas. This piece would be the perfect project to create for your home. A great way to showcase your artwork around especially in the kitchen, foyer or living room areas. Kimberly used CCB Chunky 12 by 24 Canvas, Tattered Angels Mixed Media Origins Paper in the Barn Style, along with Tattered Angels, Inks and Paints.  The best thing about this project is you can customize it to fit your color scheme and choose any size canvas base. If a farm feel isn’t your thing you can do a seaside, spiritual or contemporary theme. We have almost any style in our origins line that can fit your taste.

Step 1:  Start with a 12″ x 24″ chunky stretched canvas by Canvas Corp, their canvases do not have gesso allowing you to apply just about any medium to the surface.  You can add your own gesso or mediums to areas where you need that finish.   Canvas Corp offers a wide range of sizes and thicknesses of stretched burlap and canvases.  The sizes range of tiny 2″x2″ to 18″x24.”  This project looks amazing on the canvas, but choosing a burlap canvas would be great too.  Canvas Corp offers a nice variety of basic papers that are perfect for backgrounds that can be added to mixed media projects.  I choose the Chicken Wire Paper that I ripped into sections.  You are sure to find a background or two for the theme and designs you choose.  To view the entire Printed Cardstock Paper Collection from Canvas Corp.  Randomly glue these ripped pieces down onto the canvas.

Step 2:  I chose the Mixed Media Origins paper – Barn for this project, but you can choose the theme that fits your style best.  These papers are so fun to work with and while you cannot feel them in the photos, they feel almost like fabric.  They stand up to water and paint and let the colors just pop.  The papers are two-sided and start with a great mixed media background design and then have a range of different icons that are the focal points.  The backgrounds and the artwork have great details and shading that look amazing when ink, mist, paint, etc. are applied.  Add the barn paper to the center top of the canvas, you might need to trim it a bit and glue it down. z kimberly rooster 3
Step 3:  Take some joint compound and randomly smear it all over the canvas being careful to allow some of the chicken wire paper to peek through.  Also avoid trying to cover the rooster section, but cover the edges to make the artwork part of the canvas.

Step 4:  After it is dried, apply your paints with a brush onto the rooster until  you get the look you want.  The paper is very unique and allows you to create an amazing look with Mist Paints, Acrylic Paints, High Impact Paints…. try them all and see what works best for you.  The artwork is filled with shading and shadows that give your artwork the depth and dimension that just makes it pop.  Paint the rooster and also paint the background of the Mixed Media Origins paper.

Step 5:  After that is dried, take your finger and smear paints randomly over the canvas and joint compound, first with the brown High Impact  Paint, then add some tan High Impact Paint.  This ties the entire piece together.

This may take 2-3 layers until you get the look you want.  The detail of the script on the background looks amazing.  I would have stamped something like this myself, but no need it is already there and looks great.

Step 7:  I then added some Decor & DIY Paint – Mankato paint randomly over the layers.  The High Impact and Decor & DIY Paint are opaque and offer full coverage while the Glimmer Mist paints are more translucent and allow the artwork to show through, the mix of the paints really offers a great look.  Add touches of the High Impact and Glimmer Mist to the top of your artwork to compete the look you are going for, either more rustic or clean up the art a bit, the nice part is it is your choice.

It might be scary to tackle a large art piece like this, but with a little help from Canvas Corp Brands it is much easier than you think.  To view the entire collection of Mixed Media Origins Papers you are sure to find the theme or design that speaks to you.  Then choose your paint colors and you are ready to create your own art.  This is a great idea for holiday and special gifts where you can create one for each person on your gift list and make something special that will find a place in their home.  If you are nervous to work with some of these mediums, this a great way to give them a try knowing that there are really not wrongs here.
You can also design your own art on the same paper by drawing or printing onto the Tattered Angels Suede Paper.
We hope you are ready to take your mixed media art from the table to the wall and share your beautiful creations.  We love how Kimberly walks you through the steps and shows you how truly easy creating your own mixed media art can be.
