DIY File Folders

I made a video tutorial for the use of it, although the instructions inside the package are easy to follow too.

For the new school year I wanted to have a new folder for all the lists of my pupils. I received recently a set of the Naturally Aged Paint System Bare Metal – Bronze Patina, and I decided to make a Steampunk Folder! The Paint System is ideal for Steampunk, it really looks like rusted metal, really gorgeous!

Step 1 – I put masking tape to the spine and covered the folder with a thin layer of white gesso. I covered the chipboard pieces with Gesso too.

Step 2 – I added texture with stencils and modeling paste and randomly smeared texture crackle to some areas. Let it air dry completely. After drying I created some droplets that ‘run down’ with my hot glue gun and covered them with white Gesso.

Step 3 – Now I had fun with all the yummy colors. I used several turquoise and blue toned Glimmer Mists, brown tones of Glimmer Mists, Galze, and Glam, as well as Glimmer Glaze in turquoise.  It took some time, because I kept on adding after drying each layer and nearly couldn’t find an end *lol*

Step 4 – In the next step, I added gold leaves I have had at home for ages. I used a stencil, stiffed the liquid fixative milk through it and let it dry. I layered the gold leaves on top, pattted them down and took away the excess with a smooth paint brush. Then I polished it with a smooth cloth.

Step 5 – I ‘rusted’ and aged the chipboard gears with the Naturally Aged Paint System from Tattered Angels. I made a Video Tutorial for you so you can see how it works. You can find it on the CCB YouTube Channel! I glued them all down with Matte Medium. I also used lot of metal cogs and gears, which I also glued down with Matte Medium.

Step 6 – Now I added some interest with glass beads and mica flakes.

Step 7 – I painted the ‘running down’ droplets with brown and metallic copper high impact paint and added paint between the cogs to make them come together.

Great tutorial! I love how you did a technique video to explain the process and than a separate one explaining the project. The video really helped me to understand how each step should be done. I must say I do love videos as I can play them while working and pause or go back if needed.
    Thanks!

Loved this tutorial! I really need to bust out my materials and actually try some mixed media. I enjoy blog posts more than videos, unless the video is a quick tutorial on the project (less than 5 minutes or so.)
