Western Flower Mixed Media Placemat

We are so excited to feature a guest blogger today, Sara from the The Rosy Life Blog Spot as she takes our new collection Boots ‘n Saddle in a fun new direction.  This collection was designed to be very versatile and offer touches of western, southwest and a country feel to any of your craft projects, from a little boy’s western birthday party to super cool home decor pieces like this AMAZING painted placemat project that is paired with burlap, paint and French Script fabric, a fun and eclectic mix that comes together to create a fantastic look.  Sara shows us how to bring mixed media onto our home decor projects with these bright hand painted placemats.

Are you ready to have some fun today?  Let’s make something to pretty up our tables! I just love setting the table to set the mood and these fun and whimsical place mats using the new Boots and Saddle Collection are sure to please the people around your table!

Let’s get started, shall we?  First you’ll need to gather your supplies which are: one burlap placemat (you can make as many as you want), French Script Printed Burlap, Avocado Burlap (or your color of choice), Boots and Saddle Sayings, Rust & Ivory Bandana, Rust and Ivory TileTattered Angels Decor & DIY Paint – Saffron, paintbrush, scissors, and a sewing machine.

Start by layering your square of printed burlap centered on top of the burlap placemat.  Next, cut out any shape of your choice from the paper to go in the middle of both burlap pieces.  I chose a flower and freehanded cutting it out.  Freehand sounds a bit scary, but it is easy and has a hand made feel.  Draw it out on a different piece of paper and then trace onto the paisley paper if that makes you feel a bit better!!!

Now it’s time to put your sewing machine to use!  Sew the printed burlap square onto the burlap placemat first.  Next sew your flower (or other shape) onto the burlap as well.  You can see I also decided to cut tiny strips of paper to sew onto each flower petal.  If you don’t have a machine you can glue all the pieces in place, Beacon’s 3 in 1 Glue is a great option.

Next cut out a small rectangle from your colored burlap.  This will also be sewn onto the placemat and used as a little pocket. Once you have the pocket sew on (remember, don’t sew across the top!) cut out a favorite phrase from the Boots ‘n Saddle Sayings Paper to tuck inside for a special surprise for the guests at your table.

The last step is to add the paint! I love this step!  I used the Tattered Angels Decor & DIY Paint – Saffron and added paint to the flower, as well as polka dots all around the  placemat.  The result is a very cheery placemat, ready to greet both you and your guests.

This would also look cute if you used a different color paint for each placemat at the table.

Make a set of 4 or more exactly the same or change the center icon to different flowers, hearts or other simple to cut out shapes.  You can even put special messages in the pocket, place napkins or silverware.  This is also a great project for shower or craft birthday party where everyone takes home something special and tries their hand at a few fun new skills.

Happy Creating!
