Welcome to another Tutorial Monday! Karla Yungwirth here today, and this week we are featuring fun and simple instructions to create some beautiful handmade ornaments for your tree – or as a gift for someone else! I love the look of handmade ornaments, and I love giving them as gifts or tucking them into a stocking! The beautiful printed canvas sheet included in the Canvas Corp Jolly Christmas Mix & Match Pad was the perfect starting point to create these lovely ornaments, and you may just find them hanging on my own tree 😉 I was inspired by this month’s Christmas Bulb Challenge and I’m sharing my process so you can create your own ornaments!
Step 1
I started off painting the canvas sheet with Tattered Angels Mists by dipping my paintbrush directly into the bottle. I found it easier to first paint with the lightest colour and then add a darker colour if I wanted to add some shadows. The dark colour blended into the already wet lighter colour nicely. I made sure to let any wet areas dry first before adding another colour that I did not want to blend though! I used a heat gun anytime I wanted to speed up the drying, but it didn’t take long.
Step 2.
Next I cut out the images, leaving a small border for stitching and then painted on the Silver and Gold Glimmer Glam paints. Be sure to shake your Glimmer Glam well- I even mixed it a bit with my paint brush. I lightly dried the ornaments, letting the paint puff up a bit as it reacted to the heat. To add the gold polkadots to the gift box I simply dipped the end of my paintbrush into the Glimmer Glam and dotted it on.
Step 3.
A) I stitched around the ornaments with a straight stitch about 1/4” away from the edge, leaving a small opening to add stuffing. I found by cutting a larger area for my back layer (I used a plain piece of Canvas Corp Natural Canvas for the back) I didn’t have to worry about lining the edges up while I stitched. B) I then lightly stuffed the ornaments to give some dimension and straight stitched the rest of the way around. C) I then used a narrow zigzag stitch to finish the edges, after trimming the backing to match the front edge, to prevent any fraying.
Step 4.
Lastly, I tied a bow onto each ornament and hand stitched a jingle bell on.
Here’s a look at these three beautiful ornaments. There are so many wonderful printed canvas sheet designs available in the Canvas Corp Brands Shop! You could create a whole theme of ornaments to gift to someone or for your own tree. The mists go on so beautifully, have a wonderful shimmer to them, and are so lovely and bright – perfect for Christmas <3 I hope you’ll give them a try!
